What is a Morning Wood?
"Morning erection" is the name given to an erect penis that becomes hard when boys and men wake up after a night's sleep. However, the name is only partially accurate.

"A penis can become erect and then flaccid multiple times throughout the night, It doesn't just happen in the morning. You're just more likely to notice it upon waking."

Morning Wood causes?

Contrary to what you might think, experts say a morning erection isn't necessarily a sign of a bad dream. It's a slightly more complex (and less attractive) phenomenon.

Erections are caused by stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system. When you see, hear, feel, and even smell or taste something sexually attractive, neurotransmitters are released. This causes the arteries in the penis to dilate, which means more blood flows to the penis, which in turn causes an erection. The parasympathetic nervous system is more active during sleep, which, in addition to producing erections, also causes muscle relaxation and a slowing of the heart rate.

At what age do Morning Wood begin?
A morning erection can occur at any age. Even male fetuses have erections in the womb!

"It's very common for my friends who are fathers to call me and ask if their 3-year-old son has an erection problem," says Dr. Berglund. "The answer I always give them is that it's completely normal."

But the regularity and firmness of morning erections can decrease with age.

Why do Morning Wood occur?
Morning erections are caused in part by the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS controls many processes in the body without the patient having to think about it. These include digestion, breathing, heart rate, and sexual arousal.

This system, which helps control arousal, is activated during sleep, especially during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Most people wake up after or during REM sleep, which means they are more likely to wake up with an erection. Other factors that can cause morning erections include:

  • Hormonal changes during sleep that signal the body to send blood to the penis.
  • A full bladder, which can put pressure on the sacral nerve (the nerve that signals the brain to produce an erection).
  • Accidental stimulation, such as rolling over during sleep.

Morning erections are not usually caused by erotic dreams.

How can I prevent them?

If you have morning erections, it's a good thing! It means you have a healthy penis. However, many people ask this question because, flet's face it: it can be embarrassing to wake up next to someone, especially someone you don't know very well, and have to hide a strong erection.
